NTRCA Teacher Registration: What the 18th Cycle's Own Numbers Say About Where Candidates Actually Get Eliminated

NTRCA's real 100-mark preliminary MCQ structure (Bangla/English/Math/GK, 25 each), its +1/-0.25 marking scheme, and a funnel computed directly from the 18th cycle's own published headcounts -- showing the MCQ screen, not the written exam, does almost all the real elimination.

NTRCA's Teacher Registration Examination is the single largest sourced-volume exam in Bangladesh: its 18th cycle drew 1,340,833 candidates to one preliminary MCQ sitting. With the 19th cycle's circular already out (roughly 77,000 posts, though its exam date isn't yet officially confirmed), it's worth understanding exactly how that earlier cycle's candidates were actually filtered, stage by stage.

1. The real preliminary structure. The MCQ preliminary is 100 marks across four equally-weighted sections -- Bangla, English, Math, and General Knowledge, 25 marks each -- with one hour on the clock. Each correct answer earns 1 mark; each wrong answer costs 0.25. Clearing the preliminary requires at least 40% (40 marks out of 100). Candidates who pass move to a 100-mark written exam specific to their subject/level (school or college), and finally a 20-mark viva.

2. The funnel, computed from the 18th cycle's own numbers. The 18th cycle's published results give three raw figures: 1,340,833 candidates sat the preliminary, 83,865 passed the written stage, and 60,521 were finally certified. None of the reporting on these numbers states the survival rate between stages -- so working it out directly: the preliminary-to-written survival rate is 83,865 / 1,340,833 ~= 6.25%, while the written-to-certified survival rate is 60,521 / 83,865 ~= 72.2%.

3. The non-obvious implication. On the surface, the written exam -- a full 100-mark, subject-specific paper -- looks like the harder hurdle, since it demands deeper subject knowledge than a 100-mark MCQ screen. But the numbers say the opposite: fewer than 1 in 16 preliminary candidates ever reach the written stage, while nearly 3 out of every 4 candidates who do reach it go on to get certified. The MCQ preliminary is where almost all of the real competition happens, not the written exam that follows it. A candidate strategizing their prep time around "I'll focus on written-exam depth once I clear the MCQ" is optimizing for the easier of the two filters.

4. The marking scheme's actual breakeven math. With +1 for a correct answer and -0.25 for a wrong one on a four-option MCQ, a completely blind guess has an expected value of (0.25 x 1) - (0.75 x 0.25) = 0.0625 -- marginally positive, so blind guessing is technically still worth it over leaving a question blank. Narrowing down to two options first pushes that to (0.5 x 1) - (0.5 x 0.25) = 0.375. But the 40-mark pass bar on 100 questions requires an average per-question expected value of roughly 0.40 -- higher than even the two-option-narrowed guess value of 0.375. In other words, guessing strategy alone, however disciplined, cannot carry a candidate to the pass bar on its own; it only works as a marginal top-up once genuine subject knowledge is already covering most of the paper.

5. Why even section weighting changes the prep calculus. Bangla, English, Math, and GK are weighted exactly equally at 25 marks apiece -- no section dominates the paper the way some sections dominate in other Bangladesh government exams. That means there's no single highest-leverage section to over-index on; balanced coverage across all four is what the marking scheme actually rewards.
