Medical College Admission Test: Why Your SSC and HSC GPA Outweighs the Exam Itself 2-to-1
Bangladesh's official 300-point merit formula gives SSC+HSC GPA 200 points, the 100-mark MBBS/BDS test only 100 -- see the real split and -0.25 rule.

Bangladesh's national MBBS/BDS admission test is a single, high-stakes sitting: the 2025-26 cycle drew 122,632 applicants to one nationwide exam, with a published 66.57% pass rate. That percentage, worked out against the applicant total, means roughly 81,650 candidates actually cleared the test (122,632 x 0.6657 -- a figure no consulted source states directly, since all of them report the percentage, not the headcount).
1. The real test structure. The admission test is 100 multiple-choice questions, one mark each, one hour. The subject split is Biology (30), Chemistry (25), Physics (20), English (15), and General Knowledge (10) -- Biology alone is nearly a third of the paper, reflecting the exam's medical focus. Each wrong answer costs 0.25 marks. The pass mark is 40 out of 100, though actual admission to a government medical college typically requires scoring well above that, often 70-85+ depending on the college.
2. The merit formula most candidates underweight. Passing the test is only the gate -- the final merit score that determines which college (if any) a candidate is offered is built from three components: the test score itself (maximum 100), SSC GPA multiplied by 15 (maximum 75), and HSC GPA multiplied by 25 (maximum 125), for a combined maximum of 300.
3. The weighting nobody states directly. Add up the GPA components: 75 + 125 = 200 of the 300 total points, or 66.7%, come from SSC and HSC grades earned well before test day. The admission test itself -- the one thing every prep resource focuses on -- is only 100 of 300 points, 33.3%. This is a strikingly different balance from Bangladesh's other major university admission routes: GST's merit formula weights its test at roughly 83.3% of the final score, and Dhaka University's weights its written component similarly heavily (see this series' GST and DU posts) -- in medical admission specifically, your two years of secondary-school grades matter twice as much as the exam everyone obsesses over.
4. What that means practically. A candidate with a weaker GPA profile cannot fully compensate through the test alone, since the test's own ceiling (100) is dwarfed by the GPA ceiling (200) in the same formula. Conversely, a candidate with maxed-out GPA inputs still needs genuine command of all 100 questions -- the GPA weighting doesn't eliminate the test, it just means the test is competing against a larger, already-fixed number sitting alongside it in every candidate's final score.
5. The negative-marking floor still applies. On a four-option MCQ with -0.25 per wrong answer, a blind guess still carries a marginally positive expected value of (0.25 x 1) - (0.75 x 0.25) = +0.0625 -- so within the 100-mark test itself, the standard Bangladesh government-exam convention holds: don't leave a question blank purely on principle, but prioritize genuine subject coverage (especially Biology's 30-mark weight) over guessing strategy, since the GPA side of the formula is already locked in by the time test day arrives.
