Dhaka University Admission: A Third of Your Final Score Isn't MCQ At All

DU admission's real 120-mark structure -- 20 from GPA, 60 MCQ, 40 handwritten -- means your written answers alone are worth a third of the final score, and GPA only 16.7%, the opposite balance from medical admission's GPA-heavy formula.

গুরুত্বপূর্ণ তারিখ

Dhaka University runs five separate admission units -- Science, Arts/Law/Social Sciences, Business Studies, Fine Arts, and IBA -- each with its own test date, but all built on broadly the same scoring architecture. Understanding exactly how that architecture splits matters more than most prep guides make clear, since "MCQ test" is not actually the whole story.

1. The real structure. Each unit's admission test is evaluated out of 120 total marks: 20 come from SSC and HSC results combined, and 100 come from the written test itself. That 100-mark written test runs 90 minutes and splits into an MCQ section worth 60 marks and a written (handwritten-answer) section worth 40 marks, 45 minutes each. The Fine Arts unit differs: its written and drawing component is worth 60 marks against a 40-mark MCQ component, the reverse emphasis from the other four units.

2. The GPA eligibility floor differs by unit. To even sit the Science unit's test, a candidate needs a combined SSC+HSC GPA of at least 8.00, with no less than 3.50 in either individual exam. The Arts, Law and Social Sciences unit's floor is lower: a combined 7.50, with at least 3.00 in each.

3. The split nobody states as a share. Take the 120-mark total apart: the GPA component is 20 of 120, or roughly 16.7% of the final score. The 60-mark MCQ section is 50% of the total. The 40-mark written section -- graded subjectively, not auto-scored -- is roughly 33.3%, a full third of the final admission decision. Most prep conversation around DU admission centers almost entirely on MCQ drilling, but a third of the score is determined by handwritten answers that MCQ practice does nothing to prepare for.

4. The contrast with medical admission. This series' medical-admission post works out that exam's merit formula the opposite way: GPA contributes 66.7% of that exam's final score, with the test itself only 33.3%. DU's formula is close to inverted -- the timed test (MCQ plus written combined) accounts for roughly 83.3% of the final score, GPA only 16.7%. A candidate moving between these two admission routes with the same preparation instincts is preparing for two structurally opposite scoring systems.

5. What this means for prep time. Since the written section alone is worth two-thirds as much as the entire MCQ section (40 vs 60), and nearly a full fifth of the total test's own 100 marks, treating written-answer practice as secondary to MCQ drilling misallocates effort relative to how the score is actually built. A candidate who maximizes MCQ accuracy but neglects written-section practice is leaving a third of the available score underprepared for, regardless of how strong their GPA inputs already are.
